Facebook turns 9.

Remember the good old days when people got hooked to yahoo chat rooms to make friendship? That was the time when Internet in India and elsewhere in the world started booming. Then most of the users migrated to a new way of communicating with people through Orkut. For quite sometime, Orkut was a rage as we experienced a new phenomenon called as a social network. Scraps were something new exciting for those early adapters of social media. But that interest couldn’t sustain for longer period as Orkut couldn’t add new features like chat, videos, sharing features and upgrade according to the new demands of the Internet users across the world. On February 04, 2004, Harvard University’s dormitory, a bunch of 4 students started off something called as thefacemash.com to what is now called as Facebook.com.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder, Facebook.com, along with his three other friends couldn’t have even imagined or dreamt about its position today when they started off as students. The incredible journey of Facebook.com has revolutionised and influenced people communication n the world as it celebrates 9th birthday today standing tall with leadership position in the Internet world.

We live in the world preoccupied with our daily chores and busy lives that it becomes hard to get in touch with our loved ones. When Facebook was launched in 2004, it was only created to compare photos of its students in Harvard University. Soon it spread to other universities and went on to give public access in 2006. Things have changed dramatically since then. What might not be possible to meet your school mates, graduate friends, colleagues, relatives in real life every day, through Facebook it became easy to connect with them. Our personal lives soon went public. What’s on your mind status became a norm today to share with your loved ones on your daily life. Photos, videos, likes, comments, share; chat influenced our online world so much that people spend most of their time on Facebook than on the real world. Within a month of its launch, Facebook touched 1 million users to 1 billion users today. For 9 years, people liked Facebook despite its criticism on privacy concerns. Sharing information on what you are doing currently to breaking news, from a mere website in 2004 to a mobile and tablet app that dictates your life; Facebook’s journey has been fantastic so far.

Over the years, technology worldwide advanced so much in the development of mobility, Internet access, online medium and social media bring new technologies to connect consumers across the world. Facebook best used the technological wave to the fullest possible to create a path to social media phenomenon. Corporate companies and brands globally realised Facebook potential and soon joined the bandwagon to tap its target audience. Soon major companies even create new roles such as social media managers, digital media strategists etc to monitor their online presence. Advertisers and marketers worldwide took notice of this new advertising medium and created Facebook ads, pages for brands, fans, business, communities, sponsored stories etc. Globally advertising and media spend depends majorly on Facebook than traditional media. Students, employees who are taking courses and certification program’s on Facebook and social media marketing, are absorbed by corporates to manage their online campaigns.

Facebook went public in 2012 when it had a count of 900 million users though its stocks tumbled initially, picked up after a clear privacy policy. Just recently it announced new features like graph search redefining the way to find people, place, photos giving nightmares to companies like Google, Microsoft etc.

Some interesting facts about Facebook are:

Currently, there are 61, 499, 220 Facebook users in India, which makes it #3 in the ranking of Facebook statistics by country. Penetration of population is 5.24% and online population is 66.96%.

Another interesting statistic of 2012 is that :

More than 1 million websites have integrated with Facebook in various ways; this has proved that the platform has become mandatory for most of the website to depend on Facebook. As of 2012, 210,000 years of music have been played on Facebook along with 62.6 million songs and about 22 billion times.

What a massive data isn’t it ?

From February 2004 to December 2012, it took nearly 9 years for Facebook to touch 1 billion users globally. It’s interesting to see where the next billion users come from? We have to wait and see where Facebook will be 10 years down the line and what dramatic changes they might bring in the business world.

Wishing Facebook a very Happy Birthday.
